After a month off the newsletter team is back! We have some super events to tell you about. But first, here’s some quick news and updates:
Gulf Shrimp update - We are fortunate to still offer Gulf shrimp. We pay a premium for this product and think it is worth it - we hope you do as well! Hopefully this season’s catch will be bountiful enough to keep us stocked throughout the winter. We are concerned about food safety and will continue to keep our eye on any changes. Although the effects on seafood due to the Gulf oil spill are still unknown, we believe Gulf Shrimp are a safer bet than farmed Asian shrimp.
Good People Brewing Company update - Our friends have moved into their new Birmingham facility, so our “local beer” should always be on tap at El Rey. We’ve just finished a keg of their famous Snakehandler Double IPA and it was delicious. A keg of Hitch Hiker IPA should be on tap any day now. Follow our twitter feed to find out when it is on.

LABOR DAY - September 6 - First Monday Firkin - Straight To Ale’s Monkeynaught IPA
Hello Montgomery, the Monkey has landed - and it will be tapped at 4 PM on Labor Day!
STA filled two firkins - one for us and the other for J Clyde in Birmingham. The Clyde tapped theirs recently and the reviews and accolades for this IPA were outstanding.
Monkeynaught IPA is a tribute to the primate pioneers of the US Space Program. It has a citrusy, floral hop aroma, a strong malt body and a crisp finish.
Straight To Ale is a small production brewery that usually sells its beer exclusively in Huntsville. This is their first time to fill and ship a firkin and we are very privileged to offer it to you.
A firkin is a 10.8 gallon cask filled with unfiltered, unpasteurized, naturally-carbonated beer.
September 16 - Carnitas Fiesta - Mexican Independence Day
It’s Mexico’s 200th year of independence, so to celebrate we thought we would cook some pork!
Our carnitas are made from a locally-sourced, all-natural Duroc pork producer (Duroc is an old heritage breed of pig). We spend all day slow-cooking a beautifully marbled Boston butt in fruit, spices and chilies. The result is very much our own version of carnitas. It’s quite good by itself or folded into a tortilla with salsa and escabeche.
Although we recommend the platter with corn or flour tortillas, you can get it as an ingredient in any of our burritos, tacos, enchiladas or quesadillas.
We have a limited supply, so first come, first served.
If you were a fan of our Tacos Dorados, they’ll be back for one night only.
We will tap a Yazoo Dos Perros Brown Ale, too!

September 20 - Marzen & Oktoberfest Beer Tasting and Teaser
We will offer an impressive line-up of beer for this year’s Oktoberfest. Once all the beers are in stock we will pick a few to taste on September 20. Follow our twitter account or drop by on the day of the tasting to find out what we are pouring.
October 1 - Oktoberfest featuring Caw Caw Creek Chorizo Dogs, Pretzels and Beer
This year we will be serving Chorizo Dogs and beer at three locations - at your table, at the bar, and at a counter underneath the blinking arrow. Hopefully this will eliminate the long waits we had last year.
Caw Caw Creeks Chorizo Dogs - South Carolina’s Caw Caw Creek Chorizo served on fresh bread from Leidenheimer’s Bakery in New Orleans.
Exclusive Beers - Good People’s Weizenbock, Bell’s Oktoberfest, Left Hand Oktoberfest, Paulaner Oktoberfest, Erdinger and others that you will not be able to find in Montgomery. Plus German, Marzen and wheat beers from Spaten, Franziskaner, Sprecher, Highland and more.
Vegan Chorizo Dogs - We couldn’t dis the non-meat eaters. These are actually as good as the real deals, but then again, how’s a vegetarian to know?
Pretzels - You thought big, soft pretzels were good with mustard? Try them with Queso del Rey!
Music - Our resident DJ Glen Garza will be playing his digital Oompa Band to make you shake your lederhosen!
